![]() ![]() Microsoft thought gamepad-first was a good idea in Flight and it obviously didn't work out well for them. ![]() and you can get a pretty decent joystick without spending a fortune. Flying with a gamepad doesn't feel like flying to me (I at least need a throttle that doesn't center itself) even flying with a mouse is better. I don't like the argument that a game has to be playable on a gamepad to be successful. I backed their kickstarter but it failed, sadly. Landing on the carrier after surviving a tough mission was always thrilling. My favorite combat flight sim ever was Hellcats over the Pacific, which was a pretty good blend of a flight model with simplified controls. That's not very fun you just fly in circles all day because it won't let you do any aerobatics besides a basic loop or roll. I couldn't get War Thunder to run properly on my computer, but a lot of the casual flight games I have tried are too casual for me, with flight models that can't model a stall or a convincing takeoff/landing you can only go fast/slow or boost. The planes should have rather realistic performance characteristics, the weapons should be sensible enough (and intuitive to operate), but the setting should be fictional and rather bonkers.īy bonkers I imagine things like a gamemode where you've got two teams with giant flying aircraft carriers that act as spawnpoints, and the objective is to destroy the enemy carrier by targeting specific subsystems. What I envision is an online fighter jet game, a sort of "Counter-Strike with planes" that takes many cues from real combat aviation, but keeps things simple and intuitive. Not to mention that Oculus themselves chose a space combat game to show off CC. I think I'm pointing out the obvious here, as cockpits have been shown to be ideal settings for seated VR. However, with the recent popularity of War Thunder and the arrival of VR headsets, I think that more casual flightsims could be making a comeback. ![]()
